Vantage data center expands to Africa with US $ 1 billion flagship Johannesburg campus on the continent’s largest data center market

Today, the global footprint includes campuses in 16 markets on five continents.

Vantage Data Centers, a leading global provider of hyperscale data center campuses, today announced that it has begun building its first African campus in Johannesburg, South Africa, leveraging a US $ 1 billion investment from existing financial partners. The 80 MW campus is located in Johannesburg’s Waterfall City. This is a thriving business and data center ecosystem at the heart of the continent’s largest data center market. This indicates that Vantage has entered the fifth continent. Vantage expanded from its original US roots to two Canadian markets in early 2019, six European markets in 2020, and five Asia Pacific markets in 2021.

Sureel Choksi, President and CEO of Vantage Data Centers, said: “The global expansion over the last two and a half years has made us one of the fastest growing hyperscale data center providers in the world.”

The career-neutral Johannesburg campus consists of three facilities spanning 30 acres (12 hectares) and, when fully developed, has 650,000 square feet (60,000 square meters) of data center space. The first phase of the campus, which is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2022, will include a 16 MW building.

“Johannesburg is a data center hub in sub-Saharan Africa due to its strategic location, IT ecosystem, fiber connectivity to other parts of Africa and the availability of renewable energy,” said Antoine Boniface, president of Vantage EMEA. Says. “We look forward to not only opening the doors of our first African facility to our customers, but also becoming part of the community. We plan to invest more than US $ 1 billion in our first campus. It has created hundreds of jobs that have a positive impact on the local economy. “

Sustainable design

This design is based on Vantage’s standardized campus blueprint, offering renewable energy options, limiting carbon dioxide emissions, and maintaining energy-efficient operations with industry-leading power efficiency (PUE). Emphasizes sustainable construction practices.

Sustainable building features include permeable landscaping and natural on-site drainage to protect valuable resources. In addition to electric vehicle charging stations, Vantage will invest in elements such as recycling and motion sensor LED lighting to promote energy and water savings throughout the campus.

Power and cooling

Campuses with ESKOM will benefit from a dedicated on-site high-voltage substation. It is cooled using a highly efficient closed-loop chilled water system produced by an air-cooled chiller. The integrated economizer feature can reduce the energy of the compressor based on the external ambient temperature, which makes cooling more sustainable and consumes less resources in good weather.

Security and amenities

The company’s distinctive security measures include an on-site security operations center with 24/7 patrols, perimeter security, CCTV at all access points, and multi-level authentication for employees, customers and visitors. And access control included.

Vantage also designs comfortable employee and customer areas to help employees do their best work. Facilities include a private office and workspace, a rest area, a meeting room, a meeting space, and a secure storage area.
