UK upgrades communications at military bases in Cyprus

Cyprus, Nicosia — The UK will build a new communications facility in one of the two sites it maintains in the eastern Mediterranean. Cyprus island nation, A spokesman for the British Ministry of Defense said on Friday.

A spokeswoman told The Associated Press that the purpose of the “small infrastructure project” is to “modernize the communications infrastructure and increase its resilience.”

A spokesman talking about the customary condition of anonymity gave no further details. The facility will be built in the abandoned site of the Dekeria Garrison on the southeastern corner of Cyprus.

Britain retained its base when Cyprus became independent of British colonial rule in 1960.

The base incorporates a large airfield at RAF Akrotiri and an important electronic intelligence station at Ayios Nicolaos, about 175 km (109 miles) from the Mediterranean coast of Syria.
