Traditional Samoa plants rival the anti-inflammatory effect of ibuprofen

Researchers have identified the anti-inflammatory mechanism behind plants that have been used in traditional Samoa medicine for centuries. A new study found that a plant known as matarafi was as effective in reducing inflammation as ibuprofen.

Matarafi’s traditional medicinal uses have targeted a variety of inflammatory conditions, from fever to swelling and skin infections. The leaves of the plant are traditionally ground into a paste technically known as homogenate.

“Matarafi is used in two ways in Samoa, the treatment of ghost-related illnesses and the treatment of various forms of inflammation,” explains Seeseei Molimau-Samasoni, an indigenous scientist in Samoa. “I got my PhD in Teheren Waka in 2013 and worked with a traditional Samoa healer to harvest Matarafi and bring it to Aotearoa how and why it works.”

Interwoven with nearly a decade of research, new research reveals exactly how Matarafi produces its anti-inflammatory effect. The findings show that matarafi is an iron chelating agent. This means that Matarafi contains compounds that bind to iron, which essentially helps the body get rid of excess iron.

When matarafi was tested on mammalian cells, this iron chelator activity was found to be “decreased inflammatory cytokine response and enhanced anti-inflammatory cytokine response in immune cells.” The anti-inflammatory effects detected in this study were found to be comparable to those seen with the popular over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drug ibuprofen.

Andrew Munkacsi, another researcher working on a new study, said chemical genome analysis revealed that compounds in plants interact with genes associated with obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. I am.

“Our findings also highlight the susceptibility of the RIM101 gene deletion to the P. insularum homogenate,” says Munkacsi. “This gene is a major regulator of lipotoxicity (cell death due to lipid toxicity) that underlies obesity.”

The study highlighted the two major bioactive compounds of matarafi, rutin and nicotiflorin. Both compounds have previously been found to provide anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects. However, researchers are seeking further chemical investigations of Psychotria insularum plants, as the mixture may contain undiscovered compounds that may contribute to the overall efficacy of Matarafi.
