These magic jelly crimps can save lives for damaged tech

Regular readers know that I love wago lever nut Provides a secure and reliable connection for domestic mains voltage wiring. But another connector I use a lot is the jelly crimp. In fact I used some today to fix a broken wire in a doorphone.

Jelly crimping is mainstream in telecoms and repairs (at least here in the UK). I was introduced to them by an engineer years ago, had a few models passed down to me, and have been hooked ever since.

These connectors go by many names, but jelly crimps are the most well known.

A pack of splice connectors that apply a waterproof adhesive on the cable.

The “jelly” part of the name comes from the fact that both ends are padded with a dielectric silicone sealant that further enhances the insulation and makes the connection weatherproof.

Available in two-way (called UY) or three-way configurations (called UR), depending on whether two or three wires are connected together, to connect solid-core copper or aluminum telephones and telecommunications Specially designed for wire.

In addition to the different configurations of UY and UR, there are also different sizes depending on the outer diameter of the wire that you connect using jelly crimp. The regular UR and UY accommodate thin 22-26 awg wire with an insulation OD of 1.52mm, while the UY2 and UR2 sizes accommodate thicker 19-26 awg wire with a maximum insulation OD of 2.08mm.

There are many different brands on the market, some hit or miss, and I’ve even seen cheap ones that fall apart or don’t even contain gel. There are vendors who supply information to the telecommunications industry, but if you need to buy online, we recommend choosing the 3M Scotchlok brand.

I find the two-way one the most convenient. Lily 100 pack and UY2 Pack of 100 Enough to meet my needs.

It is very easy to use.

Cut the cable, push the end all the way in (no need to strip the insulation), press the button to bend the end, and bite the cable.

It’s easy!

Its primary use is in telephone wiring, but it has also been used in alarm systems, doorbells, speakers and other low voltage applications. These connectors can handle up to 50 V, so don’t use them on mains voltage in case someone (probably you) dies.

The connection is highly reliable and can last for decades unless it is submerged (from my experience, even submerged devices have a long lifespan).
