Small plane crashes near Ocean Springs Middle School shortly after takeoff

OCEAN SPRINGS, Mississippi (AP) – A small plane crashed shortly after takeoff in Mississippi on Friday and landed on a practice field at Ocean Springs Middle School, police said.
Captain Ryan Lemaire said the pilot, the only pilot on board, was not injured. Sun Herald.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are on the scene to try to determine what caused the Piper crash, he said.
The unnamed pilot took off early Friday morning from Ocean Springs Airport for Asheville, North Carolina. Police received a call to the crash around 7:40 a.m., officials said.
Lemaire said the fence of the practice field used by football and soccer teams was slightly damaged.
The E3 Environmental Department is on-site cleaning and defueling the aircraft.
