Skullcandy is known for its affordable headsets, earbuds, and earbuds, but it’s not so often that the vendor brings new flagships to the market.

of Skullcandy PLYR Multiplatform Wireless Gaming HeadsetAnnounced in September, the is one of Skullcandy’s newest gaming headsets.

At $129.99, it’s an affordable alternative to high-end headphone/mic combos.

After testing it, I think this product is definitely worth considering, but there are a few caveats.

Dubbed the “Black DigiHype,” the Skullcandy PLYR’s design won’t appeal to everyone. The colors used to decorate the headset remind me of Minecraft blocks. The quirky use of color, a clear plastic headband, and shots of pink all over collide with more muted gray earcups.

If you buy a headset, there are only two things to assemble. The fabric comfort band should snap into place to protect your head from the hard plastic rim. You can choose whether to connect the included microphone.

It’s a shame there aren’t other style options currently available beyond the more expensive ones Street Fighter editionthe audio quality and comfort of a wireless headset make it a strong candidate for a budget-friendly gaming rig setup.

I was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable the PLYR was. The memory foam earcups are generously sized and slip into the headset. Overall, it’s light, comfortable, and can be worn for at least a few hours without issue. With PLYR, the mic slides in and out effortlessly.

I tested the headset using nintendo switch and Samsung S22 Ultra smartphoneThe Bluetooth connection was quick and stable, and the link was established within seconds. Alternatively, the headset comes with a 3.5mm AUX cable for wired connectivity.

Skullcandy’s headset is equipped with 50mm dynamic drivers and the sound quality is impressive for an entry in a midrange headset. Bass and sharp tones tend to be dull or irritating at high volumes, but have an immersive quality and detail that appeals to the gaming community.

As for gameplay, you can also use the included apps to customize your audio experience. The app is certainly a selling point, so we encourage you to take advantage of it.

The Skullcandy-HQ app is commendable. The user interface and features far exceed the typical standards you’d expect from an audio manufacturer. Unfortunately, audio makers often see apps as an afterthought or a flashy marketing bolt-on with little real value.

This app requires Bluetooth and location services to be enabled. After connecting your headset to the app and installing the required over-the-air update, you can fine-tune your audio settings via custom equalizer channels ranging from 60Hz to 12KHz with Bass, Mid, or High options. Or you can choose from presents like RPG mode, music, movies, and even change the volume level for games and chat.

In my opinion, the detachable mic is good enough, but not the main selling point.

Overall, the Skullcandy PLYR is a great budget headset for gamers. There is a caveat. Wireless connection with PC or game console requires separate purchase of transmitter. However, as a budget-friendly headset with quality gameplay sound, the headset is certainly worth considering.
