Orange Beach woman stabbed with beach umbrella airlifted to US hospital – WKRG News 5

Orange Beach, Alabama (WKRGMore) — A woman who picked up and threw a chair and umbrella on the beach after being caught in a sudden gust of wind Monday morning was airlifted to a USA hospital. An umbrella pierced the woman’s lower leg.
Beach umbrellas and gusts of wind are a dangerous combination, and a woman is fatally injured and taken to hospital.
Deputy Chief Jeff Smith said he received a call around 9:30 a.m. Monday morning at the Phoenix II West Condominium on Perdido Beach Boulevard.
“When officers arrived at the scene, they found the umbrella stuck up to the victim’s leg, so they stabilized the victim in a standing position, maintained the position they were in when they arrived, and stabilized the injured area. “I patched her leg to take her to a USA hospital,” Smith said.
We found one guy, Josh, who was watching what happened. He even happened to set up beach umbrellas along the coast.
“Suddenly there were no clouds in the sky,” said Josh. “We got a call from the state park that the wind was picking up, so we went to shut everything up. There was an umbrella, my umbrella, and someone weighing less than 60 pounds was on the verge of flying.”
Josh also said all the umbrellas have very sharp points and even the smallest gusts of wind can pose a safety hazard. Josh and Chief Smith said it was the first time they had seen such a shocking incident from an umbrella.
“I’ve lived here for 27 years and some umbrellas have affected people because of the high winds,” Smith said. “But as far as I know, we’ve never been injured by a skewer.”
“Today has gone by so fast and so much, it’s never happened before,” Josh said.
Smith said the woman is in stable condition at a US hospital.
