During the COVID-19 pandemic, many patients with chronic health did not have regular contact with their doctors or other health care providers. Connected systems, such as those provided by AdhereTech, help patients stay in touch with their healthcare providers and gain greater control over their illness management. The company recently announced the Aidia Digital Health System, a digital ecosystem that pairs with smart bottles. Conn Hastings, Medgadget: What is the outline of medication adherence and its importance to patient outcomes?
Chris O’Brien, AdhereTech: Downstream of the medical system, non-compliance causes so much human suffering and so much cost. Medgadget: In your opinion, how did the COVID-19 pandemic affect your medication adherence? Did more patients fall out of the wagon in terms of taking tablets on a regular basis?
Chris O’Brien: Yes, unfortunately it was a tough time for everyone. At the start of the 2019 pandemic, the challenges for those taking medications on a regular and on-time basis have increased significantly as the world expands to blockades, quarantines, social distances, and health infrastructure to the limit.
One of the reasons the problem got worse was that many felt isolated and overwhelmed. Patients, especially those with chronic illnesses, are out of health care when they feel away from the care team. Remembering (and trying to replenish) medication during a pandemic remains a problem for people. However, there are promising data showing that people who can stay connected to care through telemedicine, remote patient monitoring, or smart devices feel positively supported. Connected systems like us can improve our lives and outcomes, especially during this difficult time in human history.
Medgadget: What influenced the company to develop technologies that improve medication compliance?
Chris O’Brien: The entire AdhereTech team aims to build new technologies that help people reach the best possible health and provide patients with an ongoing connection to care. As identified earlier, medication compliance is a serious problem and many solutions are inadequate to help a significant number of people get going. We knew early on that insights into human behavior and patient thinking could provide technology to address this issue. Chris O’Brien: Formerly known as smart pill bottles, Aidia smart bottles encourage people to take medication through light signals, audible chimes, and text message reminders. It also incorporates a cellular chip that provides real-time connectivity between patients, pharmacies and care teams.
This bottle was designed to appeal to a much wider patient group than early technology adopters. Connected technology isn’t just about technology. They also have to be smart about the people who use them.
Our medicine bottle was created with three principles in mind. First, it connects and works the moment the patient receives it without downloading or assembling it. Then it behaves like a regular version of the device that is not connected. In our case, it means it works like a regular bottle, so it’s simple and intuitive for the user. Adherence is not only important to the success of commercialized products. It is also the basis of clinical trials that help new treatments hit the market.
