If you frequently receive messages from senders you don’t want to receive, such as strangers, you may be familiar with the iPhone feature that allows you to filter your message inbox to known and unknown senders. But what if you find an acquaintance who accidentally gets into your iPhone’s “Unknown Sender” message inbox?

This advice is irrelevant as you will not be able to use the filtering feature if you have not enabled the message filtering feature on your device.

  1. Launch the messaging app as usual.
  2. Tap “Filter” to go to “Unknown Sender”
  3. Open a message thread for senders you don’t know or want to go to “Known Senders”.
  4. Feel free to say anything, as any kind of response to this individual delivering a message will change the status of the message from unknown to known sender.
  5. Repeat this process for other senders who switch from unknown senders to known senders as needed.
  6. Regardless of whether the message was sent as a text message or iMessage, you can change someone from an unknown sender to a known sender simply by replying to the message.

If you want to reply to someone, you need to know that person and it is expected that that person’s message will be forwarded to your regular message inbox. There are no menu options or settings for shifting messages between filtered iMessage inboxes.

If you block someone’s message on your iPhone, it will no longer be received and will not be visible to anyone other than the sender.
