For example, the core team may be a marketing expert, but achieving the goal requires the expertise of the finance team. Alternatively, the core team may be a human resources expert, but achieving a common goal requires the assistance of a logistics and planning team.

These types of collaboration are powerful. They often lead companies to significant improvements and innovative solutions.

Before discussing facilitating collaboration between teams in detail, we first need to be aware of some signs of what an unhealthy team will look like.

If you look at the statistics on why relationships fail, why people leave the organization, or why there is a high level of distrust among people in government, you’ll notice one big trend. Communication was poor.

The opposite is also true. Communication was good in areas with high success rates.

The more people you add to your team, the more you need to improve your communication and the way you communicate.

When your team was still small, you were able to successfully communicate with others. However, the more members you add to your project, the higher the level of communication you need to succeed.

Poor communication causes problems, and good communication solves the problem. If a team really wants to succeed, the success of collaboration between teams must be rooted in good communication.

Setting collaborative expectations between teams is the key to team success. This ensures that each member of the team understands the tasks, goals, actions, communications, and roles they are active in.

Then determine the desired level of work the team needs, the completion of the task, and the expectations of action. Make a note of them all.

Don’t forget to tell the team clearly and regularly.

3. Define team roles and responsibilities

Confusion is one of the quickest and unhealthy ways to ruin collaboration between teams. Success prospers with clarity.

When it’s not clear, it unknowingly creates distrust within the team. Where there is distrust, there is always a lack of success because of the lack of growth.

Building trust with collaborators between teams begins with defining who does what and who answers who.

There is a simple power when it helps people to know what they should do and who their direct boss is.

When you take the time to define these things, you show people that they can trust you. When they trust you, they help the team to be efficient and successful.

Take the human body as an example. The system that runs the system. The human body is a complex system that houses the nervous system, endocrine system, and many others. When these systems operate at optimized levels, the human body is strong and healthy.

Why do we need to look at collaboration between teams differently? The team reaches the best performance with a set of optimized systems.

To effectively enhance collaboration between teams, leaders need to develop and implement systems within their teams. You will need a system for everything you do.

For example, you need a communication system, a budget and spending system, a marketing system, a follow-up system, and so on. The more systems you deploy, the better the collaboration between teams.

After taking the time to create each system, create a sharable document that contains all the systems. This is a living document, as the system is subject to change and is often changed.

Give other members of the team the right to comment on how to improve the system. The more input from the team, the better the team’s approval and the better the system.

One thing to mention is that we don’t make all the proposed changes. Instead, talk to your team members about the change and see how they believe it will improve the system.

If the proposed changes improve your system, make changes. However, if the proposed changes do not improve your current system, leave them alone.

Trust is rocket fuel that drives collaboration between all teams. The lower the level of trust a person has in you, the lower the output you get from them.

Reliability and ambiguity are some of the biggest factors that reduce trust within a team. Seeing these two things in the team’s leadership, the team begins to think that the leader is mean and needs to hide something.

It’s not what you want your team to feel or think about. Instead, you want your team to know that you can trust that you are the one who says you are. We want our team to understand that there is nothing to hide in leadership. It’s all tied to clear communication.

When the leadership of collaboration between teams dares to remain transparent and remove communication obstacles, it becomes one of the healthiest and most effective teams.

Rejecting transparency often demoralizes the team and prevents it from reaching its true potential. The importance of this hint cannot be emphasized.

For the past two decades, I’ve seen the team collapse as leadership sticks to the need for secrets. Instead of being transparent, they lived in secret. Instead of communication and courage, they were quiet and scared.
