Google vs Startpage vs DuckDuckGo vs Bing

Google

When you pick up the newspaper or turn on the TV news, you’ll come across at least one story about the Omicron COVID-19 variant. Our first search was “Omicron Symptoms”.

Google did not show ads at the top of this search page. Top results are news articles from various local, national, and medical media outlets. Below that, the most organic result is a news article from NBC four days ago. The first page of results did not contain information from the CDC or other official medical sources.

Next, I searched for “ice cream phoenix”. Google results start with an interactive map. This map allows you to narrow down your local options by rating, price, and business hours. It’s convenient.

Then you’ll see organic search results made up of “best of” lists from different sites. This makes sense given this search. Further down the page, there are some ice cream recipes that make no sense in this context.

DuckDuckGo

DuckDuckGo also did not return ads for the search term “Omicron Symptoms”. The first result displayed is a summary of COVID symptoms, vaccination information, etc. from the CDC.

Below that is a recent news article, followed by organic results starting with a Yahoo News article. News priorities make sense given that COVID variants dominate the news and that type of coverage is up to date. DuckDuckGo now returns results from CDC immediately.

In the “Ice Cream Phoenix” search, DuckDuckGo also started from the map. This is much more streamlined than the Google version and shows the location on the map without all the frills of filtering. Still, it gets the job done. The results for the same rounding type are shown below. There is no ice cream recipe here.

Start page

The start page is the only option to display ads for the search term “Omicron Symptoms”. The ads in this search included COVID testing and treatment for symptoms of MS and sickle cell anemia. Keep in mind that ads are turn-off, but content-targeted ads are a way Startpage makes money.

Search engines do not collect and sell information about you. Following the ad, Startpage has a summary of recent news articles, followed by organic news results. The experience is similar to Google.

For the “Ice Cream Phoenix” search, the Startpage results are the most streamlined. There are no maps or other additional features. This is just a list of the same type of rounded up lists of the two search engines displayed earlier. This can be good or bad, depending on your taste. The simplicity is great, but we like to have a map there.

Bing

Bing’s results for the “Omicron Symptoms” search were the most diverse and surprisingly most impressive. A panel of information from the CDC and the World Health Organization is on the right. News articles are on the left, followed by other related search terms, recent opinion pieces, and event timelines.

In a search for “ice cream phoenix,” Bing takes a tough left from its competitors. As mentioned earlier, Bing is a video-focused search engine. And the video related here? Jefferson Airplane’s “Ice Cream Phoenix”. This is a strange combination of results that Bing can’t decide on.

There is a map showing options for watching Jefferson Airplane songs, as well as local results such as ice cream shops, ratings and times. Hey, at least Bing was thorough.
