Opinion: This week, Amazon announced that it will provide a whole new user interface for Kindle’s leading e-readers.
The new UI, which will be rolled out “soon”, focuses on making books and audiobooks easily accessible. At the top is a large search bar, tabs that allow you to jump between Home and Library, and a readjusted quick settings menu.
The update hasn’t arrived at my beloved Kindle Oasis yet, but the images released by Amazon certainly show a much more modern interface. It’s much more rounded and a bit like the OS of a smartphone.
The software is good, the hardware is good
Thank you for this update, but what I really want is a new Kindle iteration. Both the current Kindle Oasis and the budget Kindle were announced in 2019, and Paperwhite got the latest updates in 2018.
2019 may not seem that old, but it’s important to note that the latest Kindle Oasis is only a minor update to the 2017 model. All that was added was a warmer display. There are no design updates or feature bumps.
The Kindle range doesn’t have to be something Amazon updates every year, as it does for Echo devices, but enough innovation is available to update at least some models faster than it is today. is needed.
For example, the Kindle Oasis feels like the micro USB port is out of date when USB-C is found on almost every other device. It’s pretty slow, especially considering the price of £ 229.99.
The Kindle Paperwhite may benefit from the warm light features and slim bezel introduced in Oasis 2019, but the budget Kindle doesn’t have a backlight, so it might be hard to recommend to anyone. ..
What I really want Amazon to do is Kindle Voyage.. It’s a combination of Oasis and Paperwhite, and I was able to turn pages with a high-end design and real buttons.
Similar in size to the Paperwhite, with features such as Audible support, a warmer display, and USB-C, the latest version of Voyage is a compelling upgrade. Especially if it comes in at a lower price than the oasis.
Two years have passed since the last round of Kindle updates (three for Paperwhite), so new units may be announced towards the end of 2021. However, there are still few rumors and leaks about the new Kindle. There was talk of mass production of 6.8-inch displays. It may be Paperwhite 5.
The Kindle is still one of my favorite technologies, but all current models can really be refreshed. Hopefully it’s Black Friday and Christmas shopping season and I’ll fulfill my wishes.
