Foley Municipal Airport Expansion Project Underway

Foley, Alabama (WKRG) – The Foley City Council has approved a $1.2 million expansion to Foley Municipal Airport.

If you’re driving down Foley’s Airport Drive, you might see planes just sitting on the tarmac. That’s because there’s currently no space in the hangar to accommodate them. The $1.2 million project adds eight hangars and a brand new taxiway.

Foley Mayor Ralph Helmich said the funding could take some time.

“We have also applied for a three-year FAA grant to help upgrade the hangar facility and add a taxiway to the new hangar,” Helmich said.

As Baldwin County’s population continues to grow, requiring more people and more aircraft, the project comprises the construction of eight unit hangars.

“We have a waiting list of pilots who need hangar space. Some of them are currently at the airport, others are waiting for someone to leave, so what we want to do is move more of the planes that are outdoors into hangar space, and this grant will allow us to do that,” Helmich said.

Foley Municipal Airport was built in 1972 and has not been updated since. Helmich said the city will continue to upgrade and modernize facilities around the city, including the airport, when the opportunity arises.

“We also have a terminal upgrade plan and hope to get a grant for it like Fairhope got last year.

Construction of the new hangar and taxiway is set to begin later this year and is expected to be completed by this time next year if possible.
