At least for Verizon, it turns out that mobile providers are also guilty of spying. Telecommunications giants are proposing to approach their customers in the name of personalization. This raises a red flag that is exacerbated by the way Verizon is doing about it.
This is the inside story
Verizon “Custom Experience” programAs discovered by inputIs advertised as a way for companies to “personalize communication with you, provide more relevant product and service recommendations, and develop more attractive plans, services, and offers.”
Verizon collects information from the websites you visit and the apps you use. It also uses the location information of devices collected from Verizon networks and Verizon apps that have location permissions. Verizon also collects information about who you called and who called you.
There is also a “Custom Experience Plus” program that uses a wider range of information. It retains information about websites you visit within 6 months. Location and CPNI information will be retained for approximately one year.
Verizon says the information is shared with service providers who work for the company. These same service providers are “necessary” not to use this information for marketing or advertising purposes.
This is a fairly invasive data acquisition, even though Verizon is spinning. You may not know that, but if you are a Verizon customer, you are already opting in.
Fortunately, you can opt out using the privacy settings page. Method is as follows.
- Open My verizon App.
- Tap more Tabs, then Configuration icon..
- Tap Manage privacy settings..
- Tap select Below the mobile number you want to update.
- Toggle off Custom experience When Custom Experience Plus..
