Montgomery, Alabama (AP) — Alabama Legislature has returned to Montgomery to vote for a $ 1.3 billion prison construction plan.
The construction of the prison is the centerpiece of a special session starting on Monday. Proponents say it will help address the state’s long-standing problem in correction. But critics argue that the problem gets deeper and doesn’t improve with bricks, mortar and bars.
Some legislative leaders say the plan is widely supported and likely to pass next week. Some lawmakers and advocates say the state should instead address sentencing reforms, parole changes, and staffing issues.
