City of Destin considers options for addressing port congestion

Destin, Florida (WKRGMore) – followed by 12 recommendations The City of Destin is exploring options for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to improve Destin Harbor conditions and overcrowding.
A presentation on Monday, April 10 showed that most of Destin Harbor and its surrounding waterways have exceeded capacity.
The City has established a Port Capability Study Committee to review the USACE results and bring options back to the City Council for consideration.
Public Information Manager Tamara Young submitted the following responses to WKRG News’ five questions:
If any of the 12 recommendations were considered for submission to the City Council, which one?
“The full Port Capacity Study final report, including all 12 Army recommendations, will be submitted to the City Council for discussion at upcoming public meetings, including a public workshop on Thursday, May 4. I plan toth at 5:30 p.m.”

What are the next steps for the Commission?
“The committee is expected to meet again in late April or early May to make recommendations to the city council.”

What are your overall thoughts on the research results, or what clarifications did they ask for at the end of the presentation?”
“The report was well received by the Commission, and Commission members asked many questions to fully understand the findings. It is too early to say which ones to endorse, and the committee plans to meet again in a few weeks to continue its review and discussion of the report before forwarding its recommendations to the Board. We encourage public attendance and active participation in all Commission and Council meetings.”
