Alabama man convicted of killing two boys dies in prison: ADOC

SPRINGVILLE, Alabama (WHNT) — A Huntsville man convicted of stabbing two boys to death in 2008 was found “unresponsive” in his cell earlier this week.

The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) said Kishon Green, 44, was pronounced dead on Nov. 14 despite life-saving efforts by prison officials.

green is sentenced to life imprisonment without parole In 2012, he pleaded guilty to murder charges. Following his plea, a Madison County jury returned a guilty verdict after only 30 minutes of deliberation.

The trial was a formality under Alabama law.

green pleaded guilty 2 counts of murder, 1 count of attempted murder. On February 6, 2008, he was accused of stabbing his 10-year-old son Antoine and his son-in-law, his 13-year-old Frederick his Thomas. Both boys died. He was also accused of stabbing and beating the boys’ mother, Tiffany Burrell.

Huntsville attorney Ron Smith represented Greene.

“We were indicted that he may be mentally handicapped, and in 2004 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that no state or federal government can execute a person with an intellectual disability. We came across some information early on that it was dropped,” Smith said.

The facts of the case were troubling.

“Obviously it was a very difficult case for the defense,” added Smith. “And it’s an emotionally difficult case for those who had to hear it. Before the Atkins hearings, they were definitely going to seek the death penalty.

The defense claimed that Green had an IQ of less than 70. He had problems with his daily life and his problems started before he was 18 years old. A judge ultimately ruled that Green was ineligible for the death penalty.

“He said the evidence was overwhelming that Mr. Green was mentally retarded and that the law prohibited him from being sentenced to death.

Following the verdict, Green issued the following statement in court.

“Drugs have affected me. I’m not a cold-hearted killer. I ask God and everyone for forgiveness,” Green said. “I have made a huge difference in my life. I know that one day I will see my boys again.”

ADOC officials say the Law Enforcement Services Division is investigating Greene’s death.
