concept: Singapore startup AirCarbon has launched the AirCarbon Exchange, a central market for trading carbon credits using AirCarbon tokens. Leverage the blockchain architecture to create securitized carbon credits.

Nature of confusion: AirCarbon Exchange creates a hybrid decentralized platform that reflects the commodity market. It simplifies and automates the manual processes associated with OTC (over-the-counter) carbon trading. The platform allows users to leverage smart contracts to make transactions and payments and create clear, unchanging records on the system. This is intended to provide users with access to asset classes, not individual projects. The AirCarbon Token is backed by 1 tCO2e of carbon credits, which is securitized into alternative and tradable securities with transparent pricing and immediate settlement. This platform uses carbon offsets as AirCarbon CORSIA Eligible Tokens (CET), AirCarbon Global Nature Token (GNT), AirCarbon Global Nature + Token (GNT +), AirCarbon Sustainable Development Token (SDT), and AirCarbon Renewable Energy Token (RET). Its customer base includes carbon project developers, financial traders, business entities, and stakeholders in other industries.

Outlook: Blockchain can provide a decentralized borderless solution that facilitates global and instant trading and settlement of commodities. The AirCarbon Exchange aims to eliminate market friction in a carbon-constrained economy by applying a traditional commodity exchange architecture to carbon credits and securitizing them into a tradable carbon asset class. It provides a new approach to securitized token trading as a future commodity market where users can tokenize commodities and collateral. The Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro is working with the Air Carbon Exchange to establish a voluntary carbon credit marketplace in Brazil. Working with the Brazilian Carbon Marketplace (BCM), BlockC, and Rio’s Economic Development Innovation Division, it will enable trading of carbon credits listed on the BCM on other platforms of the Air Carbon Exchange. The AirCarbon Exchange has raised a total of $ 3.6 million from the 2021 Series A round.
